FRANK TOPS PROCTOR SPEEDWAY LATE MODELS

Proctor, MN
Due to the rain out of all but one feature event on June 17, the four remaining
events were run prior to the 6-24 program. Each was a full length feature. Darrell
Nelson won both the WISSOTA Late Model and Modified main events. In the 25
Late Model event Nelson tracked down Aaron Lillo from the seventh starting
position. Lillo started from the outside of the front row and it took Nelson until the
21st lap to make the pass after the first caution flag of the race. Earlier there had
been a red flag situation as the cars of Gregg Hill and Late Model rookie Scott
Herrick tangled off turn two and crashed into the ditch along the back stretch.
Herrick’s #00 did a side over roll and landed on its wheels while Hill’s #8 finished
partially on one of the huge tractor tires that are in front of the guard rail. Hill was
soon out and walking about but it took rescue workers several minutes to extract
Herrick who was seen walking to the ambulance. Word came later that he was
taken to St. Mary’s Essentia Health in Duluth where he was admitted to the I.C. U.
There was no other word on his condition by the end of the race program.
Nelson was the winner while Lillo held off a charging Kyle Peterlin for
second. Harry Hanson finished fourth and Todd Frank rounded out the top five.
Nelson also pulled off the win in the WISSOTA Modified makeup feature as
he roared to the front from his fourth starting spot. Once he got to the front there
was no catching him despite three caution flags that kept the pack close. The final
caution came on the white flag lap setting up a green/white/checkered finish.
Nelson held off Ryan Aho and Jody Bellefeuille for the win. Justin Jones and Paul
Schultz finished in the top five.
Nick Oreskovich bested Mike Bellefeuille in the Super Stock makeup feature
as the third row made their way to the front and battled for the win. Oreskovich
chased Bellefeuille throughout most of the 20 lap race but couldn’t quite make the
pass until a caution flag with six laps remaining in which Bellefeuille tangled with
a lapped car. Shortly after the restart Oreskovich made the pass and went on to
take the win. Bellefeuille hung on for second ahead of kevin Salin, Pat Heikkinen
and Al Rapp.
Dustin Follett held off Josh Loucks for the win in the 15 lap makeup Pure
Stock feature. It was a mad scramble at the front of the field at the start. Mark
Korte grabbed the lead from the pole at the green flag as Chad Nikstad, Jon
Hammitt, Follett and Esten Nelson skirmished for the lead. It was three wide for
second which turned into a five car battle for the lead which went to Follett. The
caution flag flew as Nikstad lost the right rear wheel. Follett held on to the lead at
the restart with tn laps remaining over Loucks, Jeff Engelmeier ansd Esten Nelson.
By the half way mark Glenn Dammer had taken over third and Follett was in
control. Dammer and Loucks battled back and forth for second with Loucks finally
nailing down the spot. Follett went on to take the win over Loucks, Dammer,
Craig Horak who had started 23rd and Engelmeier in the top five.
After heat races determined who started where in the scheduled portion of the
Sunday night races, the first to the track was the Midwest Modfiieds. Rookie Paul
Suzik led early from the pole over Chris Bretting, but it was Neil Balduc who
moved from the third row to pressure Suzik. Suzik made a mistake and slipped off
the back stretch leaving room for Balduc to sail by into the lead. Shortly thereafter
the 45Jr of Loren Inman stopped in turn four as a foreign object struck and broke
his helmet face shield. Inman was able to drive himself to the pits and racing
resumed with Balduc still leading. Deven VanHouse moved into second with
Andrew Inman third and last week’s winner Dan Kingsley up from 14th to fourth.
Balduc was able to pull away from the pack but Dan Larsen brought out the
caution flag. Then, after the restart, Kingsley slid off turn three bringing out the
caution flag again. The green flag flew with five laps remaining, this time for a
Suzik spin. After the green flag flew, Suzik spun again ending the first year
driver’s run. It was another green/white/checkered finish and Balduc had little
trouble taking the win. VanHous, Ross Fuhrman, Kingsley and Bretting finished in
the top five.
Next up it was 20 laps for the Super Stocks. Kevin Salin bolted into the lead off
the front row at the green flag but Scott Lawrence wasn’t going to let him get too
far away. Andy Davey had the same idea, Brian Carl looked racy in the early
going and Mike Bellefeuille was also within striking distance. Salin, Lawrence
and Davey got the bit in their collective teeth and the three streaked away.
Lawrence set his sights on Salin and edged past on the back stretch to the lead.
Lawrence then set sail. Bellefeuille was charging forward and got by Davey into
second. Trevor Wilson was headed forward from his eighth starting spot and
moved into fifth. Lawrence was cruising in the lead as Davey and Bellefeuille
battled for second as Salin and Wilson skirmished for fourth. All this racing
behind him let Lawrence widen his lead until Davey won the second spot and
reeled Lawrence in. Davey was nearly able to get by Lawrence as they lapped
Ashley Smith but was able to hang on for the win. Davey, Bellefeuille, Salin and
Wilson were top five finishers.
The Modifieds rolled onto the track for their 20 lap main event with E. J.
Hietala and Jeff Tardy holding down the front row. On the first try for a start,
Hietala and Tardy collided on the front stretch collecting Darrell Nelson. Both
Tardy and Nelson were knocked out of the event and Hietala wass ent to the rear
of the pack. The restart saw Justin Jones jump to the point ahead of Ryan Aho,
Jody Bellefeuille, Paul Schultz and Destin Lorimor. The caution flag flew for
another collision this time between Rick Niemi, Dennis German and Scott
Heikkinen. The restart saw Jones and Aho get together with Jones charged and
sent to the rear. This left Aho with Bellefeuille to contend with as Lorimor and
Schultz battled for third. Aho drove away to a huge lead and had little trouble the
rest of the way. Bellefeuille was second, Lorimor third, Jones made it up to fourth
and Schultz finished fifth.
George Ledin found himself in the lead in the early going of the 25 lap Late
Model feature. Chris Olson, Todd Frank, Joey Ogston and Tim McMann trailed.
Olson slipped and Frank took second. Ledin was still up front asFrank, Ogston,
Darrell Nelson, McMann and Kyle Peterlin moved in. The first caution flag
appeared when Mark Heinle stalled in turn three with a dozen laps remaining. At
the restart Frank grabbed the lead from Ledin who soon pulled in. Nelson,
Peterlin, Ogston and Harry Hanson gave chase. The caution flag again appeared
when roger Paolo spun in turn one setting up yet another green/white/checkered
finish. Frank held on for the win over Nelson, Hanson, Peterlin and Ogston.
Since it was too wet last week to get the heavy machinery needed to repair the
lights on the north end of the track into the infield, it was deemed necessary to
postpone the Pure Stock feature until next Sunday.
