Hermantown Hammer is King On The Hill
By Jerry O"Brien 6-11-17 Proctor, MN

Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, MN won his second Advantage RV Modified Series main event in the four day Race To The Hill swing. Nelson backed up his Friday night win at AMSOIL Speedway with a dominating run in the 40 lap main event.

A total of 26 WISSOTA Modifieds were on hand for the fourth race of four in the series swing. Also on the program were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Hornets.

Three qualifying heats for the Modifieds advanced three to the 40 lap feature, two of them qualifying for the redraw. Darrell Nelson found the number one while Danny Vang drew the outside of the front row. Kelly Estey, Al Uotinen, Alex Guthmiller, Jody Bellefeuille, Jeremy Nelson, Matt Gilbertson and Dan Ebert started in the first five rows. At the green flag Nelson jumped to the lead with Vang, Estey, Uotinen, Bellefeuille and Gilbertson trailing. Nelson moved away from the pack wile Estey bested Vang for second. Bellefeuille soon moved into third and a few laps later, Uotinen moved to fourth. Those five stayed in that order as behind the top five Gilbertson, Jeremy Nelson, Guthmiller and Neal Balduc battled for sixth. The first of three caution flags flew when Bob Broking and Rick Niemi tangled at the bottom of turn two. Nelson held onto the lead at the green just ahead of Estey while Bellefeuille held down fourth. Vang got around Uotinen for fourth, but Uotinen returned the favor a couple of laps later. Gilbertson caught up to Vang and got by for fifth as Vang fell back into the clutches of Jeremy Nelson. That battle turned bad when the two tangled in turn two bringing out the second caution flag. Vang sustained enough front end damage to warrant a trip to the pits on the hook. During this same caution period Gilbertson also retired from the field.

Nelson controlled the restart but Bellefeuille got the jump on Estey and swooped into second. The caution flag gave some drivers to close up and make their presence felt after starting deep in the field most noticeably Dave Cain from 17th and Saturday's winner Landon Atkinson. Cain found his way to fifth past Uotinen while Balduc and Dan Ebert were close. Up front Bellefeuille was giving Nelson fits as he worked the high side in an effore to dislodge The Hammer from the lead. Paul Wrazidlo was also moving forward and began to make some noise. The race was rapidly coming to a close, and with four laps remaining Cain's run came to a close when the 2c began to trail an ominous cloud of smoke bringing out the final yellow flag. With the race almost over, Bellefeuille renewed his efforts to wrest the win away from Nelson, but Nelson was able to hold him off for the win. Estey finished third, Jeremy Nelson got by Wrazidlo into fourth and Landon Atkinson ended his great run with a sixth place finish. Uotinen, Balduc, Ebert and Johnny Broking filled out the top ten.

Defending track champion Deven VanHouse used his outside front row starting spot to take the lead in the 15 lap Midwest Modified main event. Andrew Inman and Tyler Vernon trailed. Cody Carlson, Dan Kingsley and Skeeter Estey were also in the mix. A caution flag quickly appeared when Eric Anderson and Craig lofdahl tangled in turn one. VanHouse led Vernon at the green, but Kingsley made a quick move and slipped into third. A couple laps later Kingsley was able to dispose of Vernon and take the second spot. Kingsley worked on VanHouse and was able to take the lead while Inman followed him through to second. With three laps to go another caution flag flew. The restart saw Kingsley pull away while VanHouse and Vernon got past Inman to second and third. Estey was fifth and Cody Carlson was sixth. Carlson got turned around in turn one on the white flag lap and officials called it a race displaying the checkered flag
along with the caution flag and lights. It was Kingsley's first feature win of the summer.

It was a dozen laps for the WISSOTA Hornets who brought the largest number they have had thus far since they became a division at the speedway. Brittany Smith became the first female driver to win a regular season feature at the Proctor Speedway in many years, she started in the front row and led the distance for the win. The car she was piloting was the same one that won a number of features with Paul George behind the wheel and had won the WISSOTA national
championship in the Hornets with a different driver in the inaugural season. Georgr, Derek Ament and Kyle House who had come from the 18th starting spot to finish fifth.

Michael Blevins also came from the back of the 13 car WISSOTA Pure Stock field after a rare DNF in his heat, to win going away in a demonstration of pure power. A caution flag with five laps in for a Aaron Bernick spin in turn three slowed the action. Blevins was already in second place and quickly got by early leader Andrew Hanson. Dylan Shelton was third with Al Rapp and Chad Nikstad in the top five. The third caution flew when Jason Simonson and James Vendela clashed in turn two. Blevins maintained his lead on the restart and a lap later Mackenzie Bjorkland took a hard hit into front stretch wall. She was not injured, but the 17b was heavily damaged. The green flag came with three laps to go and Blevins was able to pull away for his second win at the speedway. Andrews, Shelton, Nikstad and Rapp finished in the top five.

Racing will be on a special day. Since AMSOIL Speedway is not racing on Friday June 16th,the Proctor Speedway will present Fendered Friday featuring WISSOTA Late Models, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and a visit from the ABC Raceway Six Cylinder division.
