KEVIN BURDICK CAPTURES SECOND LEG OF SUPER STOCK CHALLENGE
By Jerry O'Brien 7-23-17 Proctor, MN

The race that was supposed to, in a perfect world, finish the third edition of the FastLane Motorsports Northern Super Stock Challenge Series, turned out to be the second leg as there is no perfect world. The rain out of the first race at AMSOIL Speedway on Friday July 21st forced the first race to be at ABC Raceway on Saturday night, thus making this event at Proctor the second race of the three event series.

Thirty-eight of the Super Stocks raced the Challenge event at the Proctor Speedway. It was a weekly show minus the Late Model division with the addition of the Traditional Sprints. For once the weather cooperated as the sky cleared and the sun shone by race time.

Qualifying heats for all divisions included four heats and two B Features for the headlining Super Stock division. Brian Mikkonen, Shawn McFadden, Scott Lawrence and Dave Mass won those heats and Cory Casari and Pat Beeksma were the B Feature winners.

The 30 lap feature for the Challenge Series Super Stocks was up next with Cooper Berlin and six time and defending track champion Scott Lawrence leading the way. Lawrence led the first circuit, but current point leader Kevin Burdick took over. Lawrence, Shawn McFadden, Dave Mass and Shane Sabraski running in the top five just ahead of Tim Johnson in sixth. Burdick held onto the lead while Lawrence was busy holding off Mass. Johnson moved into the top five, then the caution flag flew again when Berlin apparently triggered a seven car pileup in turn one. Berlin was out of the event at this point. The restart saw Burdick retain the lead as Lawrence, Mass, McFadden, Johnson and Sabraski battled for position. The racing was very close between the drivers trying to catch Burdick with some position changes behind the leader who had widened the gap back to second. The front five began to move away from the pack, the only real change being Mass passing Lawrence for second, just past half way Burdick found himself in traffic at the back of the field. Cory Casari spun in turn four bringing out the caution once again with 13 laps remaining. Burdick held onto the lead at the restart, but drivers behind made some moves. Lawrence regained second, Johnson moved into third and Mass fell to fourth just ahead of Sabraski. Mass continued to fade as Sabraski took fourth. Two thirds of the way through with ten laps to go, Don Muzzy brought out caution flag number three as he veered off the track near victory lane. Burdick was equal to the task and stayed out front at the green, but Lawrence lost second to Johnson while Sabraski and Mass were in the top five. Dan Nissalke had run in the top ten all race long and was sixth at this point, but closing up in seventh was Nick Oreskovich driving the 41jr after starting 13th. Burdick was untouchable the rest of the way finishing comfortably ahead of Johnson and Lawrence to win the second Series event. Sabraski had to settle for fourth and Oreskovich ended his charge in fifth place. Casari won the hard charger award as he was able to finish tenth after rolling off in 21st.

It was the second win of the season at the speedway for Burdick, it was eighth win of the season thus far and also turned the fastest lap of the race at 16.92 seconds. His margin of victory was about a quarter of a second over Johnson. Burdick had one final duty in victory lane, he drew two positions and those drivers would receive a $250 bones each from Northern Clearing of Ashland, WI. The lucky drivers were Brian Mikkonen and Don Muzzy. Scott Lawrence, the defending point champion of the series' third place finish versus Saturday's winner Dave Mass' seventh place finish has him in the lead by a scant two points going into the finale on Friday July 28th at AMSOIL Speedway.
