“One of the nicest guys you will ever meet passed away tonight and the dirt track world wont be the same. Don Roseen spent the majority of his life chasing the dirt track scene as a racer, promoter, President of Wissota, track prep operator and many other things i dont even know! Don had such a love and a passion for the sport we all love and to be honest, he passed away at the track and I dont think he would of wanted it any other way. RIP Don, you will be truly missed, i am truly blessed i got to see you one last time yesterday, regardless of the situation. **DON ROSEEN IS BACK IN VICTORY LANE MY FRIENDS**” Joe Stariha

By Jerry O’Brien 8-30-12 Proctor, MN

Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI became the fifth driver in the 40 year history

of the Silver 1000 to win the Late Model feature back to back joining Jeff

Hinkemeyer (‘81, ‘82), Rick Aukland (‘88, ‘89), John Kaanta (‘02, ‘04) and Jeff

Provinzino (‘09, ‘10). Kaanta was the runner up in this years edition.

On hand were 33 WISSOTA Late Models matching the 2011 total along with

38 WISSOTA Modifieds. The stands were filled to bursting with race fans as were

the vehicle parking spots that ring half the track, one of the best crowds of the

races history.

It has become a tradition at the Silver 1000 which gets it’s name from the fact

that the early winners were paid with $1,000 silver dollars, that each participant is

introduced to the crowd and given a small trophy that contains a silver dollar.

After the opening ceremonies qualifying began with heat races for the

Modifieds which were won by Skeeter Estey, Ryan Aho, Dan Ebert and Brad

Hanson. Late Model heats went to Travis Budiaslovich, Brent Larson, Harry

Hanson and Jake Redetzke. Then there were a pair of B Features for the Modifieds

won by Rick Rivord and Jeff Hart. The Late Model B Feature went to veteran

racer Tim McMann. Following the B Features there were a pair of Dashes to

determine the starting spots of the first four rows in the respective features. Those

went to Ryan Aho in the Modifieds and Zach Wohlers in the Late Models. Then it

was time for the main events, the first of which was 30 laps for the Modifieds.

Jeff Broking who shared the front row with Aho, broke from the pack to the

lead at the green flag followed by Aho, Dan Ebert, Brent Larson and Brad Hanson.

The front four attempted a breakaway but the caution flag flew as Skeeter estey

got turned around in turn two. With two laps complete, Broking maintained the

lead at the green followed by the same players. Charging from the eighth starting

slot was Jody Bellefeuille who made his way to forth. Also on the move was Kelly

Estey up to fifth from 12th. Larson and Hanson slipped back to be challenged by

Tim McMann and Kevin Adams. Up front Aho got by Broking to the lead and the

pair began to put some distance between themselves and Ebert in third. Aho broke

away from Broking by ten car lengths as the half way point approached. At the

mid point was reached, it was Aho, Broking, Ebert, Estey and Bellefeuille in the

top five with Darrell Nelson, Hanson, Adams, McMann, Dave Cain and Justin

Jones in the top ten. Up front Aho began to lap cars at the back of the pack,

coming up on several cars racing for position. Aho finally made his way through

but Broking had closed to within five car lengths and Ebert was within sight of

him. Aho drove away from everyone in the waning laps to take the win and a

sweep of everything he entered. Broking ran a steady race to second while Ebert

finished third, Estey fourth and Bellefeuille fifth. Nelson, Adams, Larson, Hanson

and Jones rounded out he top ten. The win is Aho’s first in the event.

It would be 40 laps for the WISSOTA Late Models in the 40th edition of the

Silver 1000. At the green flag rookie Late Model driver Zach Wohlers got the

jump on Smith and Redetzke also got past. Smith gathered it back up and raced

past Redetzke back to second. Jeff Provinzino ran in fourth as Budiaslovich and

Hanson battled for fifth. Wohlers had six car lengths on Smith who had about

eight on Redetzke as the front runners strung out as Budiaslovich took fifth and

closed on Provinzino. Wohlers closed on the back of the field andSmith and

Redetzke caught up as the lapping process began. As expected, traffic became a

factor as the three front runners began to find their way through. Smith drew

alongside Wohlers with Redetzke right behind and the trio went three wide in an

exciting battle for the lead. At the half way point Redetzke had the lead by a

fender but traffic continued to be a problem. Smith gained the point over Redetzke

with Wohlers back to third. The fourth place skirmish between Provinzino and

Budislovich was three quarters of a straight away behind the leaders. Running in

sixt at this point was John Kaanta ahead Jeff Massingill, Tommy Waseleski, Jr and

Harry Hanson. Smith finally broke free of traffic as did Redetzke but the first

caution flag of the event flew when debris was spotted on the track. With fourteen

laps remaining, the green flag flew only to have the car of Terry Lillo become

hung up on the inside marker tires. The next try at a start proved to be the downfall

for Redetzke as a collision with another car caused him to run slowly off the back

stretch and roll to a halt in turn three. The next time wasa the charm and racing

resumed without incident. Smith now led Wohlers, Provinzino, Budiaslovich and

Kaanta with Waseleski close behind. Kaanta began a charge up to third behind

Wohlers, gassed it by into second and closed on Smith as the laps dwindled. The

gap between Smith and Kaanta was considerable and he needed a caution flag to

help make it up. He got one in the form of a breakdown by Provinzino who pulled

off the second turn into the infield with a silent engine. Smith now had to deal

with a very fast Kaanta with eight laps remaining. Kaanta tried his best in those

final laps, tried for his third win but Smith was too stout and became the fifth back

to back winner in the 40 year history of the event. Wohlers, Waseleski, Jr, and

Hanson rounded out the top five. Marshall Fegers as sixth, 2012 track champion

Kyle Peterlin drove from 17th to seventh, Darin Meierotto from 18th to eighth and

Darrell Nelson and Budiaslovich finished in the top ten.

The final weekly event of the 2012 racing season is in the books and the track

champions have been named.

On the WISSOTA Late Model side, Kyle Peterlin of Hibbing, MN took home

the Late Model championship for the season. Peterlin entered the final feature

event with a four point lead over fellow Iron Ranger Harry Hanson of Eveleth.

Peterlin’s second place finish behind winner Todd Gehl coupled with Hanson’s

fifth place finish was enough to insure the track title for him.

Despite a Did Not Finish for Darrell Nelson in the 20 lap WISSOTA Modfiied

feature, his point lead was enough to ensure the Modified title for the veteran

driver at the Proctor Speedway for 2012.

Scott Lawrence of Superior, WI won his Super Stock heat race and drove to a

second place finish in the 20 lap feature which was more than enough to make

sure the 2012 Super Stock crown would be his.

Deven VanHouse’s heat race win along with a third place finish in the 15 lap

main event was enough to lock down his Midwest Modified track title at the

Proctor Speedway Sunday night.

Esten Nelson held enough of an edge in the Pure Stock point standings that a

DNF and 17th place finish in the evening’s 15 lap feature was not enough to cost

the Grand Marais resident his first track title at the Proctor Speedway.

Dale Suomala made a strong move at the start of the Midwest Modified feature

and took the lead, but some slipping and sliding cost him the lead before he could

cross the stripe to finish t he first lap. It was national points hunter Cory Crapser

that came out at the head of the pack and sailed off to the big lead. Danny Vang,

who had started inside the fourth row soon vaulted into second and gave chase.

Dan Kingsley ran third and point leader Deven VanHouse slid into fourth past

Andrew Inman. Meanwhile, as the event progressed without a caution flag,

Crapser and Vang did battle way ahead of the second and third place runners and

found themselves in a tight pack of cars doing battle for position. Vang and

Crapser found themselves behind a car soon to be lapped and each chose a side to

pass. Vang came out on top with Crapser stymied and suddenly five car lengths

behind the new leader. Vang went on to take his fourth feature win at Proctor

Speedway. Crapser finished second with VanHouse in third one place ahead of

Kingsley who had been his closest competitor for the track title.

Darrell Nelson just needed to take the green flag in the 20 lap WISSOTA

Modified feature to nail down the track crown in the division. Rick Cannata drove

out to the early lead from outside of the front row. Nelson made his way into the

second spot and began to cut into Cannata’s big lead. He quickly tracked him

down and raced out front bent on putting an exclamation point on his 2012 track

title. But those plans went by the wayside as he suddenly dived into the infield out

of the event. Cannata was left at the head of the field with a huge lead again. At

the half way point Cannata was cruising along well out in front of Brad Hanson,

Scott Heikkinen, Nick Musel, E. J Hietala and Ken Hron all running in a pack.

Cannata continued to cruise along and Hanson was unable to cut into the lead

despite his best efforts. Hron burst out of the pack to finish third ahead of Jody

Bellefeuille and Musel.

Scott Lawrence didn’t need to take the green flag in the 20 lap WISSOTA

Super Stock feature in order to win the 2012 crown. It was Mike Bellefeuille who

jumped out to the lead at the green flag with Kevin Salin, Jeremy Fink, Nick

Oreskovich and Tom Cianni trailing. Bellefeuille was cruising in the high groove

and pulling away when Bob Preble took a spin in turn four. Bellefeuille

maintained his lead at the restart with 14 laps remaining and Lawrence up to

fourth. Another caution flag appeared when Ashley Smith spun in turn three.

Bellefeuille got a good restart as the half way point was reached with Fink, Cianni,

Salin and Lawrence following. With nine laps remaining another caution period

occurred when Salin found the front stretch wall. Now it was Bellefeuille hoping

to hold back the charge of Lawrence who had advanced to second. Bellefeuille

was up to the task and went on to take his first feature win at the speedway.

Lawrence, Fink, Slin and Pat Heikkinen finished in the top five.

Kyle Peterlin entered the final regular season WISSOTA Late Model main

event with a four point lead on Harry Hanson. Todd Gehl, who was racing in his

eighth feature of the season after recovering from an illness that kept him out of

the car for most of the season, took the lead at the outset and was determined not

to give it up. Peterlin ran in second as Hanson was stuck in ninth. Gehl pulled out

five car lengths on Peterlin who was just ahead of Tim McMann, Darrell Nelson

and Zach Wohlers. Meanwhile further back Hanson was struggling as he was

boxed in by Dave Esse and Kevin Carlson as the three raced for position. The

caution flag flew when Wohlers turned around in turn three. Gehl was up to the

task on the restart and kept the lead as Hanson made his way to fifth at the half

way point. The top five positions did not change the remainder of the event with

Peterlin’s second place finish enough to take the track title from Hanson. Gehl,

Peterlin, McMann, Nelson and Hanson rounded out the top five.

Esten Nelson had a good enough point lead in the Pure Stock standings that an

early caution flag charged to the Grand Marais, MN driver and a subsequent 17th

place feature finish still wasn’t enough to take the 2012 track title away from him.

Fellow Grand Marais driver and good friend Craig Horak took over the lead in the

15 lap event and drove the green #26H Station Wagon to the win. Meanwhile

Nelson was making a charge through the field and had made it up to sixth when a

flat right front tire sidelined the #77. Despite the trials and tribulations, Nelson

was crowned the 2012 Pure Stock champion.

Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, MN won Race of Champions qualifying

features Sunday August 12 at the Proctor Speedway. The wins qualify him for the

Races of Champions in each division at the 2012 WISSOTA 100 in September

held at the South Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, SD should he choose to

make the trip.

Scott Lawrence, Superior, Deven VanHouse and Glenn Dammer won the other

feature events.

Donnie Lofdahl led the first three laps of the 20 lap Super Stock Main event

until the caution flag flew for the stalled car of pat Heikkinen that rolled to a stop

in turn three. Point leader Scott Lawrence took advantage of the restart as he

jumped to the front at the green flag with a good run off turn two. Lawrence led

Lofdahl, Kevin Salin, Andy Davey and Ashley Smith and raced out to an eight car

length lead. The only change in the top five before the mid point came when

Davey got the better of Salin and went to third. Lawrence increased his lead to

three quarters of a straight away while Lofdahl held a like amount of distance over

Davey. A caution flag flew with seven laps remaining which closed up the pack.

Lawrence went on to take the win, his fifth of the season, ahead of Lofdahl,

Davey, Salin and Brian Carl. Lawrence has qualified for the 2012 Pace of

Champions.

The field for the WISSOTA Modified feature was a tiny one and, as a result,

only ran a ten lap feature. At the start Nelson was gone and Nick Musel, Jody

Bellefeuille and Scott Heikkinen duked it out briefly for second. Nelson raced out

to almost a half lap lead and won literally going away. Bellefeuille, Musel and

Heikkinen finished in that order. It was Nelson’s forth Modified win of the season

at the speedway.

Jeff Engelmeier led early and often in the 15 lap Pure Stock feature, Glenn

Dammer, Esten Nelson, Dustin Follett and Craig Horak battled in a pack for

second. A pair of caution flags slowed the action, the first for a Lucas Carlson spin

in the first turn, the second for a tangle between Andy Leino and Annika Hammitt.

Leino’s number 06 suffered a broken drive shaft. At the restart Engelmeier held

onto the lead over Dammer but some rubbing in the pack resulted in the front

bumper being partially ripped off the front of the #3D. The caution flag was

shown so the errant part could be removed. Unfortunately racing without a bumper

on either end is not allowed and Follett was disqualified. Engelmeier led off at the

restart with Nelson second and Dammer third. Dammer got by to the lead and went

on to win his first feature in some time driving his father’s car.

The start in the 20 lap Midwest Modified feature was called off when the car of

Jim Inman rolled to a stop on the back stretch. The next try was successful and

Dan Kingsley took the lead ahead of Danny Vang, Josh Heavirland, John Kaiser

and point leader Deven Vanhouse. Kingsley drove away to a good lead while

Vang, Heavirland and Kaiser battled for second and were soon joined by

VanHouse. Kaiser surged to second and began to track down Kingsley. The

caution flag appeared for a tangle between Heavirland and Dan Larsen in turn one.

At the green Vang made run on Kaiser and took the lead as VanHouse got by

Kingsley and Neil Balduc joined the action. VanHouse got past Vang and saw

daylight at the front but again the yellow flag flew when Kingsley, Kaiser and

Kyle Matuska tangled in turn one. On the restart Vang was overwhelmed by

Balduc and Kingsley inside and out falling back to fourth. VanHouse was cruising

out ahead of the pack and went on to take his third feature win of the season.

Kingsley, Balduc, Vang and Kaiser finished in the top five.

Harry Hanson led Tim McMann at the start of the 20 lap Late Model feature

followed by Joey Ogston, Kyle Peterlin and Aaron Lillo. A caution flag flew when

Dave Esse and Lillo tangled on the front stretch with a pair of laps concluded.

Hanson held onto the lead at the restart and Darrell Nelson appeared in third.

Hanson continued in control as the laps slipped by. Hanson then made a slip at the

top of turn two and Nelson shot by leaving Hanson to fend off Peterlin. Nelson led

the rest of the way for his fourth Late Model win of the season. Peterlin, Hanson,

McMann and Ogston rounded out the top five.

It was a full day Sunday at the Proctor Speedway. American Cancer Society

Relay For Life presented the annual Race Against Cancer and Fan Appreciation

night.

The day started with a free picnic at the speedway along with a show of race

cars capped off with a night of racing. 14 drivers took advantage of the offer of

free pit admission if they would bring their cars for display starting at noon, the

most that have ever taken the offer in the five year history of the event.

Feature action began with 20 laps for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Dan

Doran started from the pole but it was Dan Larsen who grabbed the lead at the

outset. The caution flag flew right away as Doran went off turn one. The restart

saw Neil Balduc get the jump on Larsen but Larsen was back out in front across

the back stretch. Balduc retook the lead as Danny Vang raced up from the fourth

row to take second ahead of Deven VanHouse and Larsen. Vang got tipped around

in turn one by Justin Oestreich bringing out the caution flag. On the restart Balduc

was caught napping as Vang and VanHouse got by but the caution flag again flew

setting up another restart. This time Balduc was ready but VanHouse got the hole

shot but still another caution flag appeared. On this restart it was Vang out front

then VanHouse and Balduc. Larsen ran fourth but some distance back. The top

three battled amongst themselves as they pulled away from the rest. It came down

to a battle for the win between Vang and VanHouse side by side for several laps

before VanHouse surged ahead and went on to the win. Vang, Balduc and Larsen

followed by Bill Matzdorf were in the top five. Matzdorf had started tenth. It was

VanHouse’s second win of the season at the track.

Next the Pure Stocks were trotted out for their 15 lap feature. Matt Hammitt

surged to the lead for a brief time ahead of Glenn Dammer and Justin Bassa but it

was point leader Josh Loucks who captured the point followed by heat winner

Mike Sirois Dammer, Bassa and Esten Nelson. Sirois’ run ended with a flat tire as

Bassa again took second. Jon Hammitt and Jeff Engelmeier were also in the mix

up front. The only caution flag of the event flew when rookie Tyler Carlson went

off turn four. The restart was single file and Loucks expanded his lead as Jon

Hammitt, Bassa, Nelson and Engelmeier battled behind him. Loucks won and

padded his point lead as Bassa finished second Jon Hammitt third Nelson fourth

and Engelmeier fifth.

Ryan Aho got a great jump and sailed around the outside from row two to the

lead in the 20 lap Modified feature. Justin Jones, Paul Schultz, Nick Musel and Al

Uotinen ran just behind. Darrell Nelson was charging forward from last where

started due to a flat tire and DNF in his heat and was seventh in the early going.

Nelson’s charge continued and soon he was third behind Jones and Aho along

with Schultz, Musel and Jody Bellefeuille. Nelson put on a surge and took the

lead. The caution flag flew when Scott Miller broke a drive shaft. Aho was right

behind Nelson at the restart and took back the lead with a strong outside move in

the fourth turn and led the rest of the way. Nelson, Bellefeuille, Musel and Jeff

Tardy rounded out the top five.

Willie Johnsen got a strong start and took the lead but the caution appeared

when Mike Bellefeuille went off the top of turn two. Bellefeuille was out and

Johnsen kept the lead on the restart over Scott Lawrence, Ronnie Malecki, Scott

Lawrence, Jeff Tardy and Donnie Lofdahl. The caution flag flew when Pat

Heikkinen spun in turn four. Johnsen held the point as Brian Carl joined the top

five until Heikkinen grabbed the spot. Lawrence pulled up inside Johnsen but

couldn’t quite make the pass as the caution flag flew again as Carl and Heikkinen

continued their battle for fifth. At the green Tardy got a great run on Lawrence and

Johnsen, but couldn’t quite pull it off until the next time by. As Tardy pulled away

the order behind him stood at Johnsen, Lawrence, Lofdahl and Carl. Tardy raced

out to a big lead until Carl spun in turn four. There was a quick caution flag on the

restart when Johnsen spun on the back stretch. There were six laps remaining at

the green with Tardy out front, Lawrence now in second and Lofdahl third. Tardy

went on to take the win over Lawrence, and Lofdahl. Kevin Salin and Malecki

finished in the top five.

The final feature of the evening was 20 laps for the Late Models with Dave

Esse and Terry Lillo leading the way. Harry Hanson shot up off turn four to grab

the lead with Darrell Nelson to second. The caution flag flew and Lillo was out. At

the green it was Hanson, Nelson, Don Copp, Esse and Joey Ogston. Kyle Peterlin

was on the move and took over fifth after starting dead last. Nelson was closing on

Hanson as Peterlin slipped into fourth. Another caution flag flew when second

running Nelson spun by himself in turn two, a rare mistake for the veteran. There

were eight laps remaining at the restart with Hanson at the point. Another time for

the caution flag as Esse spun off turn two. Hanson got a good start and Peterlin

found himself in second with Kevin Carlson in third and Nelson back up to fourth.

Peterlin encountered problems with the #23 on the back stretch bringing out the

caution flag again. The restart came with three laps remaining and that was plenty

of time for another caution flag as Esse went off in turn three. Hanson made it to
